How to Choose Between Adventure, Culture, STEM and Service Trips
Choose the trip type from the outcomes you want, not from the most exciting brochure image.
Adventure
Best when personal challenge, teamwork, resilience and outdoor skills are central. Check physical demands and accessibility so challenge does not become unnecessary exclusion.
Culture
Strong for language, history, identity and intercultural understanding. Prioritise meaningful interpretation and interaction over simply visiting landmarks.
STEM
Best when students can investigate real systems, collect data, meet specialists or apply classroom knowledge in the field.
Service
Appropriate when a credible local partner defines a genuine need and students have time to prepare, contribute responsibly and reflect on the ethics of the experience.
Hybrid programmes
Many excellent trips combine two or more approaches. The key is coherence: each element should reinforce the overall educational purpose rather than create an overloaded itinerary.
